I remember being with my class singing "Anthony Rowley" in what was probably an end of year concert at Princes Street School, in 1956...the same year I remember being totally shocked out of my socks when sidling shyly up towards Father Christmas to receive a small gift at the end of the concert and recognising with absolute earth-tilting horror that under the red and white heavily bearded costume sat my father! That is probably why it is all remains so very clear in my memory...sudden knowledge that the world you think you know so well is indeed not at all reliable will do it for you every time!
However, after this rather shaky start, I was always in the school choir, giving concerts and attending eisteddfods at the various schools I attended around the State during my school years.
Enough of this aimless reminiscence...but the words of the old froggy song were a strong enough prompt for me to think of Anthony, whom I thought of as a very intrepid and rather heroic soul...after all, how brave did one need to be to proceed with ones plans, "whether his mother would let him or no"...at four years old that is quite a paradigm shift in the world order!
Do pop over to "Every Inchie Monday" and check out the other dedicated "Year of Animals" Inchworms!
A Frog he would a-wooing go,
Heigho! says Rowley,
Whether his mother would let him or no.
(chorus) With a rowley, powley, gammon and spinach,
Heigho! says Anthony Rowley.
I made bread rolls and a lemon cake for lunch...
Also, Sarah's dear card ordering client has asked me to make her another birthday box card...this one for a woman who loves books and wine...after an initial blank my head is now buzzing with ideas for that one! I think it will have to be my next project...
Well, that's about it from here for now, talk soon,
Di
