Australia does not have any endemic species of squirrel, so my personal knowledge of the animal is largely based on Beatrix Potter and other literary and image sources...I thought there were only a few different types of squirrel, mainly red and grey ones...but on reading up a little over the weekend, I discover that there are over 200 species, divided roughly into three categories...ground squirrels, tree squirrels and flying squirrels, spread throughout much of the world.
Captivating and appealing animals to many, there are many YouTube videos about them and their inquisitive ways...but then, I don't have to live with them...
For my inchie I needed to rely on Sarah, who lived in America for a time, (I used one of her Arkansas images last time I needed a squirrel), and Melinda my daughter in law who visited the UK with Simon on their honeymoon a few years back and had some photographs of these animals.
Mel kindly sent me a couple of images of Jimmy, a little grey chap they met in Hyde Park, London...so I used his image for my inchie...thanks Mel, for the photographs, I can see why you wanted to smuggle him home with you, he is very appealing!
The weather remains hot with lightning starting many bush fires over the State, particularly one which is still burning on the Great Pine Tier...these fires are in remote areas of the highlands and are difficult to manage. The smoke haze is ever present to remind us of the dreadful reality of the damage being done while the fires continue to burn, and also the danger to those who attempt to control them, or who live in areas where the fires are burning.
I have included a couple of my lightning images taken during an electrical storm on the fifteenth...
A full moon and a clear sky always makes me want to take images of the moon...but these simply don't work out on my phone. I am seriously considering a purchase now, of a "proper" camera...we will see. it is an investment that will require some considerable thought. while I only had the microcosm of my garden and various landscapes, my phone was more than adequate...now I live in a house with a broader view and so many other birds going about their business, the thought is very tempting! We will see! |
Better go, I have a pan of delicious little field tomatoes roasting with garlic to make a pasta sauce for supper...trying to get the heat out of the kitchen before the day warms up too much...and by the aromas drifting in to the computer room, they need my attention.
Bye now,
Di
