Deer were introduced back in the early 1800's by the early settlers, determined to have something familiar to hunt and eat.
Fallow, Red, Sambar, Rusa, Hog and Chital deer species were introduced, but the Fallow deer, here in Tasmania, are thriving and looking to become one of our worse pest threats. Many deer also escaped from deer farms when they were popular during the nineties, as well as many animals being illegally "released" into the wild...hunters certainly don't ever want to run out of things to hunt, after all!
From being an animal that was regarded as charismatic and legislatively protected in the past, with very few studies undertaken to determine the ecological impact of deer in our widely divergent environment, they are now understood to have very detrimental effects on native flora in many areas, even to the point of altering the structure and composition of vegetation communities and disrupting ecological processes particularly in rain forests...not to mention their impact on agricultural crops.
However, the silly season is upon us and we won't let serious ecological and conservationist issues distract us just at this moment in time...(that is rubbish I'm spouting here), truth is it is far too hot for me to stay in my craft room, so I am limiting the discourse on this one...
While my inchie this week, sadly the penultimate one for EIM, should be Moose or Reindeer, I have simply taken an elderly SU stamp of an undisclosed species of antlered ruminant, slightly larger than the inch required, but as it is the only one for the full year, I have decided to allow myself a little licence in the dimension of this weeks entry. It still fits onto the 1.5 inch square mount board mat, however.
I simply stamped the silhouette image in Memento Tuxedo Black ink onto a red card, heat embossed with a very old and never before used SU embossing powder called "Iridescent Ice", added a tiny star, cut it out and adhered it onto the mount board square and we are done...
Don't forget to pop over and check out the other deer entries...only a week to go...
It took a few days as I am really having great difficult now, in standing for any length of time..and I was a bit challenged to fill her order...the heart not being in it, really, but she came down on Saturday and together we decided on a few finishing touches, (which included an avocado in a Santa hat...don't ask!), and she has gone off happily, prepared for the festivities of this final week.
Better trot, time is marching on...
Bye,
Di
